Below are a few instructions to help you connect your Bluetooth heart rate device. For Android devices, the app must have the OS version 9.0 at minimum, and for iOS devices, the device must have iOS 14 or later to function properly. Heart rate devices will not connect if you do not have these prerequisite operating systems.
The instructions below explain how to connect a Bluetooth heart rate monitor. After recording a workout with heart rate data, the heart rate data will appear on the app and website as a workout summary for that activity:
1. Enable your phone's Bluetooth
Go to your device's General Settings > Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth ON. Do not attempt to pair from this screen.
2. Enter device pairing mode.
- If using a chest strap, moisten the oval sensor pads on the heart rate monitor. Put the heart rate strap on, with the plastic heart rate transmitter resting just below your sternum. For most other Bluetooth Smart sensor connections, this step is omitted, but you'll still need to enter pairing mode.
- Often, heart rate sensors allow you to enter pairing mode by turning the sensor off, then turning it back on and holding the power button. Newer sensors with displays and user interfaces will sometimes have the option to enter pairing mode or turn on Bluetooth from the device menu itself.
3. Open MapMy and tap the "More" icon in the lower right (iOS), or the three horizontal bars in the upper left (Android), to open the app's Menu. From the Menu, tap "Apps & Devices."
4. Select the heart rate option. After selecting your device, a connected screen will appear. When connecting a heart rate monitor, MAKE SURE that your heart rate strap is being worn and that the sensor pads are moist and in contact with your chest before tapping "Connect." Once the connection has been made, you can see the stats your device reads on the display screen.
5. Next, turn on Auto-connect to ensure Bluetooth Smart devices remain connected throughout your activity and when you re-open the app in the future.
6. Once the heart rate is visible, return to the "Start Workout" screen and tap "Start Workout." You can tell your device is connected by the sensor icon, and you can further customize your display stats.
7. After ending your workout, you will see averages of your connected device stats. To analyze these numbers further, you will need an MVP Membership.
Troubleshooting Your Bluetooth Device
If you've followed the instructions above and are still unable to get your heart rate device to connect, please try the following:
1. From your phone's Settings, toggle Bluetooth off, and then on again
2. Restart your phone (and the sensor itself, if possible), and retry the above pairing steps. This step should often fix any problems with your phone's miscommunication with the Bluetooth frequency and allow the sensor to be picked up.
3. Delete and reinstall the app from the app store, which will both ensure you're using the latest version and should clear any temporary files and cache that may have caused this problem.
4. Check the strength of your device's battery to see if it is low or dead. CR2032 coin cell batteries tend to last between three and six months of normal use (1hr per day), but the battery can be drained more quickly if the device accidentally enters pairing mode when not in use.
5. For iOS users, ensure MapMy can access your location and background functionality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my watch as a Heart Rate Monitor for the app?
MapMy connects with several compatible Bluetooth heart rate sensors, including some that accompany activity trackers with strapless or wrist-based continuous heart rate. However, not all activity trackers use the same Bluetooth profile to connect to MapMy, and we cannot guarantee compatibility with wrist-worn heart rate devices.
