Live Tracking

Live tracking is an MVP feature that allows other MapMyFitness users to track your progress along a route you are creating with the app in real time using a combination of GPS signal and cellular data. This feature requires a strong cellular signal, and its reliability is dependent on a steady data connection. In areas with high cellular traffic or low signal the feature may lapse.

Only the person wishing to be tracked needs to have the subscription membership. To view the person live tracking navigate to the app and simply select the "Live Tracking" tab. Any friends currently Live Tracking will be visible and broadcasting here. You can turn off live tracking from the pre-workout menu after selecting the "Track Workout" option. Unfortunately this cannot be accomplished on the website right now.

Please note, Live Tracking is only available in the app, and that in order to view someone live tracking on the latest version of the app, you will need to quit or save your workout, unless the friend is live tracking in your vicinity. MapMyFitness friends who are in the same geographic area will appear as live tracking on the map while you record an activity.

How to Use Live Tracking

You can see the Live Tracking option at the top left of your "Workout Setup" page. Tap the icon to enable.

In order for Live Tracking to work you will need to ensure a few settings are correct. The tips below should allow proper functioning of the tracking feature.

  1. First, access your profile privacy settings and make sure your default privacy is set for public or friends:  Privacy settings. Live tracking requires a public or friends privacy setting depending on who you wish to be able to view your activity live. You will not be able to track with the setting on private.
  2. Turn on cellular data and ensure you have a good signal.
  3. In order for the live tracking to work you must be in motion.
  4. You cannot view your live activity from your own account. Users must be logged into a different account to view your workout from the "Live Tracking" tab in the app.
  5. If you'd like to live track someone, turn on push notifications. This will allow you to be notified when one of your friends begins a workout.
  6. Upgrade to the latest version of the app. Typically live tracking is optimized for the latest version.
  7. When recording make sure your device has a clear line of site to the sky so it can accurately and reliably stay connected to the satellite for your timezone.
  8. Allow up to five minutes for Live Tracking to begin working once your workout and movement has started. This gives the app time to use data to triangulate and broadcast your location to both other apps and the site.
Please check that all these conditions have been met before reporting a problem with Live Tracking. We've been careful to make a deliberate set of steps to take to ensure that user privacy is respected - nobody can EVER live track you without your permission.
