Course Troubleshooting FAQs

What are courses?

Courses are portions of workouts that are used to compare your effort against yourself or other members on the course leader boards. They are a competitive aspect of MapMyFitness and allow you to track your performance with friends and others who complete the same courses. Courses earn points and awards and reward repeated efforts not just speed.

Courses are public and are automatically matched to your workouts if you are using a GPS enabled device. There is nothing you need to do to enable courses, just go record a workout. If there are no courses on your workout you can create one!

For more information on creating click here

Can I apply past workouts to a newly created Course?

When you create a Course we backfill your workouts for the current calendar month. Only these workouts will be processed because prior month's leader boards are considered final at the end of the month.

I only see my best time on the Course leader board. Where can I find my other times for the course?

On the leader board for the course, change the "people" filter to "me" and adjust the time period (maximum is 1 year).

I manually entered a workout and don't see courses or points, what gives?

Courses and points are only available to workouts with GPS and timeseries. If the workout is manually entered we have no way to verify your time/performance.

Where can I find courses I've created but haven't done yet?

You can see courses that you haven't ridden yet by going to My Home/My Routes and Courses. Click the Courses tab and change the "Courses I've Done" to "Courses I've Created".

Can I make my course private?

Not currently, but we may add this feature if there is enough interest. If you are concerned about privacy, remember that we only show your first name and last initial on the leader board. If you set your workouts as private in your user settings others will not be able to click through on the leader board and see your workout or route. You can also change your first and last name on your account to something other than your real name.

A course I made doesn't show up on my workout

That shouldn't happen. Please open a support ticket and send us a link to an example workout as well as a link to the course that should have matched. We'll be happy to take a look. It could be a problem with GPS on the workout, or it could be a problem with the course itself.

I do a regular workout and sometimes the course shows up and sometimes it doesn't (intermittent matching)

This probably is due to the course start or endpoints being on the edge of your workout path. Because it is on the edge any variance in your path or GPS signal could cause the course to miss the required start or end of the course. You can often see the problem by zooming in on your course map and observing the start and end points of the course. Your best bet in this case is to recreate the course from a high quality route or workout.

The other possible cause is dropping of your GPS signal at start/end points or for a significant percentage of the course. When looking at your map you will see long straight sections for your route indicating that the signal is sent infrequently.

There are two very similar courses on my workout. Can they be merged together?

Yes, just send us the links in a support ticket. We can combine them and recalculate all the workouts.

What happens if I do a course multiple times in the same workout?

Your fastest time from that workout is what is posted to the leader board for that workout. If you want to view all your times for that course on the workout, click the "repeat" icon in the courses list:

This will open the Course Repeats list in the Laps menu.

Is there a way to find/search for courses within a general area that were created by others?

Yes, I have the same question. You can search routes, but not courses it appears?

I love this feature but would love to search for specific courses in an area…is there any functionality to do this?

There should be a way to select a course from the app.

I agree. If I know the name of a well- known hike why can't I search it and have the route come up for me. Am I missing something?

I do a lot of cross country skiing. Others do this as well. I have designed courses along my routes. They show up on my activity feed, but there are no leaderboards for this sport. My friends who want their ski courses to show up on leaderboards call their activities "running", whether using mammyride or mapmyrun. Is there a way of using the leaderboard function with skiing?? How?

Re: finding Courses. We are planning to add this functionality. For now, the best way to do this is by navigating to the City page for the area you are searching (Home menu/My City). Once on the city page there is a tab on the map that can be changed from routes to Courses. There is also a list of popular courses at the bottom of the page.

    Kirsten,

Thanks for the suggestion. We would love to include more winter sports as course activities. I will make sure the Courses team knows there is interest.

All of my runs are done on the same 1.5 mile track, which someone else on our military base has recorded as a Course for MapMyRun. Out of my 8 runs, only 1 of them has been properly categorized under the Course. Several of these runs has been multiple-lap runs around the particular Course. The fact that almost NONE of these runs have had their results properly logged under the page for the Course is pretty ridiculous.

And yes, all of these workouts were GPS tracked, and nearly all were logged AFTER the Course was created.

It's frustrating to have all these miles go to waste in terms of sharing results and staying competitive with other people running the track. I hope the Course plotting/categorizing becomes a little more refined and accurate. Until then, it's only 1/8 useful to me.

    Hi Kenan,

I recreated this course as a loop and tested against some workouts that had failed to get a match previously. It looks successful, so I'm now migrating older workouts over to the new course and will delete the original when that is complete.

The original course was failing because the start and and points were so close together that they could be tripped out of order. We added a Loop feature to courses a few months ago to solve for this type of problem.

    Best regards,

Wow, thanks for the rapid response and help. I didn't expect that much attention to detail in solving the problem, I really appreciate it.

Excellent app, excellent support! Thanks again Weston!

Why is there a difference between a route and a course. I just did a 20 mile loop, with start and stop about 300 yards away. I want to make the entire route a course for my friends to see, and try. When I created the course from the route, it said I had done it zero times. What gives?

    Hi Walter,

I believe that number will refresh and be correct after the course has been completed once. There is a delay with the number of time completed not refreshing at the time the course is created. What should happen when you create a course is that your workouts for the current month should be reprocessed. If you are not seeing a match with the course for either backfilled workouts or on new workouts, please open a support ticket with a link to both so I can check it out.

    Best regards,

When I do a repeat, will I receive points for both, or only the fastest?

  • Avatar
    Weston G.

Only the fastest. In the future we would like to give guru points for each repeat but it is not that way currently.

  • Avatar

So. I should end the run and start another to receive the points?

  • Avatar
    Weston G.

yes, that's the only way around the current logic.

I think the courses feature on MapMyRide is one of the things I really love about this app. However there is a cycle path near where I live that someone created a series of courses on and I am trying to test myself against others and improve but I am getting very frustrated because the app appears to want to put me on roads and not the cycle path when it's tracking me. I must have done the 3 courses the cycle path is split into about 9 or 10 times now and it has registered 3 times. Is there any way to fix this?

I have a standard short bike route I had been doing last fall/winter. I started back up on it recently and the courses on that route (that I did not create) are not logging points (like they did last year). I have tried on the route I created and on a "new route" setting. I come online afterward and see all the courses I rode with my PB times, but they don't show up on the app anymore and don't give me points. Do I need to name/create all of the courses on my route for this to work properly now?
