The old format was very much easier to use. I would often go between following roads and not following them on my route and this switch is much more cumbersome.  It is hard to see the roads in the satellite view and when I used the map view and then wanted to verify an exact location with the satellite view, the transition between the two did not work.

I was a frequent user of map my walk but will use another mapping site if this new and definitely not improved version becomes standard.

I also preferred the old format.  Where are the topo maps?

One real improvement would have been to allow an out/back feature to certain points.  It's also a pain to have to move to edit mode to view maps in certain formats.

Seems a backward step as the 'split' function is not available. How do I revert to old format?

I preferred the old model by far. This new UI is clunky, cluttered, and confusing. I saw that as a Millennial who's able to pick up new tech as quick as a whip. The one thing I really want, to know how far I am running, is almost impossible to find with all the other superfluous information floating around and covering 50% of the map that I'm trying to plot points on.

If there was another reliable mapping service, I'd use that instead. I may even begin actively searching for one in anticipation that this update becomes permanent. After using MapMyRun for over 10 years, I gotta say, I'm disappointed.

One thing to consider is having an Old/New toggle so customers who prefer the old format can use that instead.

Wow - was surprised to see the new format.  Initially I thought the presentation looked pretty good - but after just a few minutes, I became extremely disappointed - it is much more cumbersome to use, and I was unable to create a route as repeated clicking on a paved road had the route self-divert to some point off in the bush.  Multiple attempts resulted in the same result.  Since I don't believe myself to be insane, after a few tries I stopped.  Also, the control panel to the left takes up a good portion of the screen.  I have a small laptop that I travel with - this makes it only possible to use the map in 'full screen' mode.  Being able to close that panel (as the lower control can be moved with the 'arrow' would be better.  But the failure of the routing and my need to create a route today to share with our riding group will now have me spend time looking for another solution and link to it for our group.  This should have been something that you had a button to allow users to got to the old version.  Please let me know if this gets fixed or abandoned.

How can I change between pedestrian, car and cycle mode?  Sometimes the map self diverts to a wrong street as though I was driving a car, when I want to continue on a bike path or running trail.  The old version allowed me to do that.  I agree with all the other comments.

It's rubbish - far too complex. Go back to the old one!

The new version is not at all user friendly for people with visual impairments. I use a lot of Zoom and VoiceOver type tools, and had no issue with the previous UI. The new UI and my assistive tech does not combine well. The contrast between map and side panels aren't enough, so I struggle to figure out where the edges are, where I should enter text, and please don't ever use white text on a light blue button. That's just impossible to see.

Personally I would be more than happy to continue using the old UI, even if you don't make any new updates to it. It worked for my needs as is. So it would be great if there was a toggle to do that, even if you only introduce new features to the new UI.

I'm not just being difficult and opposed to change, it's just that this doesn't work for me at all.

Thanks for all of the feedback! We really appreciate it and want to make sure the new Create Route page is meeting your needs. I may reach out to some of you individually for further details about your feedback, but there were some things I believe that I can address here that we may just need to make more clear before the full launch of the page.

    • The option to toggle auto-follow roads on or off is at the top of the controls panel on the left and should function exactly the same as it does for the old page.
    • The satellite map does not include labels but the hybrid map includes the satellite map with street labels shown.
    • Transitions between different map views should work at the moment, but if you go into Google's Street View to really zoom in on something, you'll need to exit that view before the map will transition.
    • The new page does not include topo maps, but this is something we'll look into.
    • The option to create an out and back is at the very left of the map. If you create any segment, you can use the “Out + Back” option which will return you to the starting point following the same path, or the “Return” option to return to the start by the quickest path available.
    • The split function no longer exists; however, you can now create your own points along the route at any point instead of only being able to split in the middle. Clicking any part on the route itself will create a new point that you can interact with.
    • The distance for the route is located at the top left just below the route name, instead of at the top of the floating tools panel that was present on the old page. We believe removing this floating tools panel should give you more vision of the map itself. The elevation graph at the bottom can be minimized and we are also looking at making the control page on the left collapsible as well.
    • We did not initially add the option to change between walking, riding, or driving though this is something that we can add back if people find it useful. The page currently always assumes that you are walking for the purposes of route creation.
    • Accessibility is definitely something we are working on and will be making improvements there before a full launch of the page.

Thanks again for all of the feedback!

Seperating the functions in the 'controls' from the buttons down on screen (undo' etc) is a poor design as those functions are frequently used together, eg 'auto follow roads' is often turned off and on when route planning in certain areas. Its just poor design to seperate out a set of functions  that are used for the same purpose into two dialogues.  Does Tim actually use this himself for route planning>? it's a no brainer to group similar functions used for similar purpoies into one place.

When creating a route, it seems it's stuck on "Walk". In another words, it creates the route as a walking mode, therefor it follows sidewalks, not streets (as in creating a route under "Bike route".
I'm about to leave this app if this isn't fix immediately. I am a constant user creating 2 to 3 maps a week.

I have been a long time subscriber but is it time for me to go to RideWithGPS? Ball is in your court.

BTW, I thought this was MapMyRide, not MapMyWalk. lol

    Old format is better.

Due to the lag time between the google droid mapping the Tucson Loop system and the sports apps displaying the paved routes, it’s common for users plotting routes to toggle between walking (red line) and normal.

Don't make this app anything as busy and primitive as ride with gps.

I use map my ride because it looks best on a mobile and easy to plot group rides.

This new format is awful. No need to change a tool that was already working well.

Do not like it. Very cumbersome and not at all user friendly. Go back to the simpler, old version.

Please bring the old format with all of it's bells and whistles.
I need to create new routes for our cycling group and the present format does not work for me.
(ex: routes by sidewalk so if the street has no sidewalk, it won't map it).

The one thing I want to see is my MILEAGE.  If I close the sidebar and elevation chart to get more working map, it's gone.  Please bring it back so it's available in all views.

Like others, I much prefer the old map.  Why fix what's not broken?

    2
  • Meghan Sauer

The new route tries to anticipate where I ran - it adds segments that don't belong.  The mileage is what I need.  I really don't like this new map.  If I can't easily import/create routes, I'll use another app.  The old map worked well.  I need to track mileage more than time.  The glitchy-ness of this update version is pretty awful actually.  Nothing wrong with the old one.  This one is horrible.  I thought I was losing my mind until I saw this article.  Now I know - it's the new map.

    This is not an improvement!!!

How do I add washroom and other symbols to my maps?  This is the only reason I have a paid subscription from you!!!

Also, I can't figure out how to rename my route from this new screen.  Feeling very frustrated.

How can I go back to the old tool? The screen constantly jumps away from the spot I am mapping, and it took me at least three times as long to draw up a route. If that's not bad enough, there's no way to add symbols to my routes, which is important because I am drawing up group rides. I have a paid subscription for years for these features. It seems like every time a part of the site is redesigned it's dumbed down and important functionality is removed. Please don't launch any further "updates" until you can at least offer the existing functionality. I used to tell everyone about MapMyRide. Now I cannot recommend it.

Please bring back the old format!  Along with all the other comments, unless you have the large control panel covering a third of your map, I can't see anywhere that shows the mileage you have mapped out.  It wasn't broken, why did you think it needed to be "fixed".  This is a big step backwards

Please allow option to toggle scroll wheel zoom on

PLEASE bring back the OLD system, or at least let us continue to use it, even if it is no longer the default system! I do not see any benefits whatsoever with the new system, only loss of features that I found valuable. So I've no idea why you have done this. As Barbara said a few days ago, it is a big step BACKWARDS.

I can not stand this new create route set up!!  Please keep the old one.  This new one is horrible and I can't see the total route length easily.  It never keeps my address and I just hate using it now.  So user UNfriendly!

What happened to the "Split following segment" feature - very useful when slightly amending routes. Often, I plan walks that involve sometimes following roads and sometimes not. If you could put the "auto-follow roads" button above the "Clear"  button, you could reduce the size of that hideous great box on the left which takes up a third of the screen, since the other controls are likely to be more constant ie would not require changing during a route plan

And what happened to the feature where in "edit" mode, a point could be dragged to another location - useful if following footpaths and making slight alterations.

So the question is - with almost universally negative feedback, why is UA still running this piece of junk?  Please go back to the old version until you can come up with something that is actually better.

Miss the old site. This one is unwieldy. Sometimes it recognizes my (almost-always-the-same) starting point, but 8/10 times it can't find it so I have to dicker around with the map. Hard to include off-road paths, as well. Map too small and instructions box at the left too big. Please bring back the old site.
